The making of art at Woodberry involves the distinct blend of objective process, (basic skills) and the subjective mode (ideas). Obviously, one suffers without the other, as neither alone can fully engage the viewer. Ideas need form to live; form without content is dry.

Students involved in art at Woodberry are challenged to develop a personal concept of quality, not only as it applies to the art making process, but as it applies to the realm of human endeavor at large. Boys are encouraged to pay attention to what they are doing, apply themselves fully, and to care about the outcome of their work.

There are several outlets in which a student can explore his artistic interest. The school offers programs in photography print making, painting, drawing, sculpture and pottery. Professional artists who serve as adjunct members of the faculty lead these programs. A full-time art instructor teaches the studio art and art history classes, and works with the advanced placement students.

A year-end highlight is the student art exhibit. Students from the various classes and extracurricular programs mount a show to present their best works to the community. This show is well received and highly regarded by the students on campus.

With its aim being the inspired response to an active imagination, the study of art at Woodberry is a popular activity.
